Privacy Policy

The Independent Media Institute (IMI) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting it. This policy describes the types of information we may collect from you or that you may provide when you visit our website, as well as our practices for collecting, using, maintaining, protecting, and disclosing that information.

Traffic Data and Use of Cookies

When you visit IMI’s website, we collect basic information about your computer, including: IP address (your computer’s unique signature), operating system, browser software (e.g., Chrome, Firefox, Safari), and internet service provider (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, etc.). We ask for your permission to employ cookies (small text files placed on your computer’s hard drive) to track the type of content and sites to which our users link and the length of time they spend at any particular site. We also collect information about what you view on our site and we use this information to help us optimize content. This information will never be shared with anyone outside of our organization.

Data Protection Officer

Elizabeth Carena is responsible for staff training, quarterly internal audits and notifying the EU GDPR supervisory authority within 72 hours in the unlikely event of a data breach. You can contact her at [email protected] if you have any questions relating to GDPR.

Emails

After submitting a form on our website, users will receive a confirmation email followed by email newsletters and other occasional announcements from IMI. In order to distribute our email, we collect and store subscribers’ email addresses. We do not share addresses with other companies or partners. Users may unsubscribe from any email from IMI at any time by clicking either the “Update Preferences,” or “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the email, or by writing to [email protected].

Donations

We use Donorbox for our online donation forms and to process our recurring donations (their privacy policy here) and Stripe, an industry leader in data security, is our payment processor. Their ongoing commitment to compliance with European data protection laws is outlined on their website.

Donors

If you choose to give a tax-deductible donation to IMI, you may provide personal information like your first and last name, email address, phone number, or mailing address. Whether this transaction takes place online via a form on our website, or offline via a mailed check, bank transfer, or other method, we store the related information in our cloud-based donor management system, the industry leader Salesforce. We never share nor sell this information with any other entity, nor do we send mailings on behalf of other organizations. To request the deletion of your personal information or donor history from our records, please contact Development Manager Elizabeth Carena at [email protected].

Surveys

IMI may conduct surveys of site visitors to obtain aggregate demographic information about them. Providing this information is voluntary and subject to the consent of the visitor. This information may be compiled and shared in the aggregate with third parties, but no personal details will be traceable to or associated with specific individuals.
